Is an MBBS Degree from China Valid in Pakistan? (PMDC Rules 2026)
Yes — an MBBS from China can be valid in Pakistan, but only when the university and program meet PMDC's rules and you pass the licensing exam. Here is how to check, step by step.
Every year thousands of Pakistani families ask the same question before paying the first fee: is an MBBS degree from China valid in Pakistan? The short answer is yes — many Pakistani doctors practising today studied in China. The longer answer is that validity is not automatic. It depends on three things you can check yourself before you apply: the university, the exact program, and passing the licensing exam set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) when you come back.
This guide explains each of these in plain language, shows you how to verify a university on your own, and lists the mistakes that most often cause problems later. We do not invent rules or numbers here. Where a detail changes year to year, we point you to the official source so you can read the current version yourself.
Who decides whether a Chinese MBBS is valid in Pakistan?
In Pakistan, the regulator for medical education and doctor registration is PMDC. To work as a doctor in Pakistan with a foreign medical degree, you need PMDC registration. PMDC sets the conditions for foreign graduates, publishes its regulations, and runs the licensing exam that foreign graduates must pass.
On the Chinese side, China's Ministry of Education controls which universities may teach medicine to international students in English. A Chinese university can be a famous institution and still not be authorised to run an English-medium MBBS for foreigners. That is why you need to check both sides: what China allows and what PMDC accepts.
The three conditions you must meet
1. The university must be recognised
The university should appear in PMDC's current guidance on recognised foreign medical institutions. Check the name exactly — several Chinese universities have similar names, and a near match is not good enough. Our PMDC-approved universities article explains how to find and read the official list.
2. The program must be the right MBBS
Make sure you are enrolling in the English-medium MBBS program for international students, not a different degree with a similar title. Ask the university for its official program name and duration in writing, and keep the admission notice. When you later apply to PMDC, your documents must match what the regulator expects.
3. You must pass the licensing exam
Foreign medical graduates must pass PMDC's licensing examination (commonly called the NLE) before full registration. Even with a degree from a top Chinese university, you cannot practise in Pakistan without passing it. Plan your preparation from the middle years of your MBBS, not after graduation.
How to verify a Chinese university yourself
- Open the official PMDC website and find the latest regulations and guidance for foreign medical graduates.
- Search for your target university by its exact English name.
- Ask the university for written confirmation that the program is its English-medium MBBS for international students.
- Compare the program duration and internship arrangement with what PMDC requires.
- Save screenshots and PDFs with dates — rules can change, and you want proof of what you checked.
- If anything is unclear, contact PMDC directly before paying fees.

Common mistakes that cause problems later
- Choosing a university only because it is cheap, without checking recognition first.
- Trusting an agent's screenshot instead of reading the official PMDC document yourself.
- Enrolling in a program whose name or duration differs from the English MBBS for foreigners.
- Ignoring Chinese language study — clinical years involve real patients who speak Chinese.
- Leaving licensing-exam preparation until after graduation.
- Losing original documents such as transcripts, internship certificates and the degree itself.
Does the university's ranking matter for validity?
Ranking does not decide whether a degree is valid — recognition does. A highly ranked university such as Peking University or Zhejiang University usually offers excellent teaching hospitals, but a lower-ranked university can still be a valid choice if it meets PMDC's rules. Rankings matter more for teaching quality, research and future postgraduate options. You can compare universities on our best medical universities page and on each university profile.
What about scholarships and fees?
Validity and cost are separate questions. Fully funded MBBS seats in China are rare, and most Pakistani students pay tuition with partial awards. Our MBBS scholarship page explains what is realistic. Fee figures on our university pages come from our records and are marked as verified or estimated; always confirm current fees on the university's official website.
A simple checklist before you accept an offer
- University name checked against PMDC's latest official guidance.
- Program confirmed in writing as the English-medium MBBS for international students.
- Duration and internship arrangement noted and saved.
- Fees, hostel and scholarship confirmed in writing.
- A plan for Chinese language study and licensing-exam preparation.
If you can tick every item, you have done what you can to make sure your Chinese MBBS will count in Pakistan. If one item is unclear, pause and get the official answer first — it is much easier to fix before you travel than after six years of study.
