HSK Requirements for Chinese Universities — 2026 Guide
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the official Chinese proficiency test. This guide explains which HSK level is required for English-taught vs Chinese-taught programs, how to prepare, and the new HSK 3.0 changes.
HSK is China's official standardised test for non-native Chinese speakers, similar to what IELTS is for English. The test has 6 levels (HSK 1–6) under the current system, with HSK 3.0 introducing levels 7–9 for advanced learners and academic use.

What HSK level do you actually need?
English-taught programs (MBBS, English Masters, English PhD)
No HSK required for admission. However, most universities expect MBBS students to reach HSK 4 by year 3 to communicate with patients during clinical rotations.
Chinese-taught Bachelor's programs
HSK 4 minimum, HSK 5 strongly preferred. Many universities offer a one-year foundation Chinese language program with HSK 4 as exit requirement.
Chinese-taught Masters / PhD
HSK 5 minimum at most universities, HSK 6 at top-tier C9 universities. Engineering and science programs sometimes accept HSK 4 + IELTS.
