ANSO Scholarship 2026 — Guide for Pakistani Students
The ANSO Scholarship supports international Masters and PhD students at Chinese Academy of Sciences institutions. Here is how it works and how Pakistani students can apply.
The ANSO Scholarship is one of the most searched China scholarships in Pakistan after CSC. It is aimed at science and technology students who want to do a Masters or PhD in China. Because it is less well known than the Chinese Government Scholarship, there is a lot of confusing information online. This guide explains what it is in plain words and points you to the official source for every detail that changes yearly.
Important: we do not repeat stipend amounts, age limits or deadlines here, because they are set in each year's official call. Always read the current notice on the official ANSO website (anso.org.cn) before applying.
What is ANSO?
ANSO stands for the Alliance of International Science Organizations, an international scientific organisation based in Beijing and initiated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). One of its programs is the ANSO Scholarship for Young Talents, which funds international students to study for Masters and PhD degrees in China.
Where can you study with ANSO?
ANSO scholars typically study at institutions connected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, such as the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and CAS research institutes. USTC is in our university database — see its profile for fees, programs and scholarship options from our records.
Check the official call for the current list of host institutions, because it can change between years.
What does the ANSO scholarship cover?
ANSO is generally described as a full scholarship covering tuition, accommodation support, a living allowance and insurance. The exact amounts differ between Masters and PhD and can change each year, so read the coverage section of the official call rather than relying on numbers copied from other websites.
Who can apply?
- Non-Chinese citizens in good health (Pakistani students are eligible to apply).
- Applicants with a relevant bachelor's degree for Masters, or a master's degree for PhD.
- A strong academic record in science, technology, engineering or a related field.
- English or Chinese ability that meets the host program's requirement.
- Age and other limits as stated in the year's official call.
How to apply for the ANSO scholarship
- Read the current call on anso.org.cn and note the deadline and required documents.
- Choose a host institution and program that match your field.
- Find a potential supervisor and contact them early — research fit matters for ANSO.
- Prepare your degree, transcripts, passport, recommendation letters and research proposal.
- Apply through the official channel stated in the call, and also apply for admission to the host institution if required.
- Wait for the institution's review and the ANSO result, then the admission notice and visa form.

ANSO vs CSC — which should you choose?
| ANSO Scholarship | CSC Scholarship | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | Alliance of International Science Organizations (with CAS) | China Scholarship Council |
| Degree levels | Masters and PhD | Bachelor, Masters and PhD (mostly postgraduate) |
| Fields | Mainly science and technology | All fields |
| Where | CAS-linked institutions (e.g. UCAS, USTC) | Many Chinese universities |
| Apply via | Official ANSO call | campuschina.org, via HEC or a university |
Many students prepare for both. If your field is science or engineering and you have found a supervisor at a CAS institution, ANSO is a strong option. If you want a wider choice of universities or fields, CSC may suit you better. Follow each program's rules about applying to more than one scholarship.
Tips for a strong ANSO application
- Write a focused research proposal that matches your supervisor's work.
- Mention research experience, publications or a strong final-year project.
- Get recommendation letters from professors who know your research ability.
- Apply early — supervisors receive many emails close to the deadline.
- Read our guide on writing a CSC study plan; the same structure works for ANSO proposals.
Documents checklist for ANSO
Each year's call sets the exact list, but ANSO applicants are usually asked for documents similar to other Chinese postgraduate scholarships. Start collecting them early, because attestation and recommendation letters take time in Pakistan.
- Passport photo page, valid for your study period
- Highest degree certificate and full transcripts, attested as required
- Research proposal or study plan for your chosen field
- Two recommendation letters from professors or senior researchers
- English or Chinese language evidence, if the program requires it
- Publications, conference papers or project reports, if you have them
- Any acceptance or support letter from a potential supervisor, if the call asks for one
How to find a supervisor at a CAS institution
Research fit is central for ANSO. Browse the faculty pages of UCAS, USTC or the CAS institute in your field and look for professors whose recent papers match your interests. Write a short, polite email: introduce yourself in two sentences, mention one of their papers and why it relates to your work, attach your CV and a one-page research idea, and ask whether they are accepting international students. Do not send the same email to dozens of professors at once — tailored messages get far more replies.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on stipend or deadline figures copied from old blog posts instead of the official call
- Applying in a field the host institution does not offer
- Sending a generic research proposal with no link to the supervisor's work
- Leaving recommendation letters to the last week
- Missing the host institution's own admission step when the call requires it
If ANSO does not work out in one cycle, the same preparation — proposal, supervisor contact and documents — also strengthens a CSC application. Our CSC requirements and deadline page explains that route.
